CBD is widely known for its ability to reduce anxiety, prevent pain and improve heart and brain health, but recent studies have shown that CBD can also assist with weight loss by reducing appetite and helping the body burn more calories.
CBD for weight loss – the science behind the theory
Each person has a unique chemical messaging network called the Endocannabinoid System (ECS) that helps our bodies to regulate appetite, sleep, pain, mood, memory, our immune system and so much more.
The ECS orchestrates the desire to eat, and the digestion and metabolism of nutrients from food.
It does this by controlling different organs, including:
- Hypothalamus (brain) – controls appetite and metabolic rate of other organs
- Liver – cholesterol synthesis, glucose uptake, storage and synthesis, fat burning
- Muscle – glucose uptake and use, fat burning
- Fat tissue – glucose uptake, fat storage, fat burning
- Pancreas – insulin release
- Gastrointestinal tract – speed of food transit, nutrient absorption
The Endocannabinoid System is made up of cannabinoids and cannabinoid receptors. CBD (cannabidiol) and THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) are two of the most well known cannabinoids.
When cannabinoids enter our system, the ESC is activated because the molecules attach to the cannabinoid receptors. There are two types of cannabinoid receptors, CB1 and CB2.
THC primarily binds to CB1 receptors which are mainly found in the brain and are responsible for the intoxicating effects of marijuana. It’s also responsible for giving people what is widely known in the cannabis world as ‘the munchies.’
CBD, on the other hand, does exactly the opposite. It primarily binds to CB2 receptors which are found throughout the body and are responsible for a wide range of biological functions, including the suppression of appetite and metabolism. You can read more about the research here.
How CBD reduces appetite
CBD helps to crush food cravings by ‘blocking off’ or deactivating the CB1 receptor responsible for the hormone that increases food intake. At the same time, this miracle compound stimulates the CB2 receptors and this decreases inflammation and the desire for food.
Some CBD products, such as the Fat Burner CBD Oil by Hempelicious, go a step further and supplement the CBD oil with a powerful, naturally occuring energy burning amino acid called L-Carnitine. An appetite reducing, fat burning ‘double whammy’ if you like.
How CBD turns ‘bad fat’ into ‘good fat’
A study way back in 2016 found that CBD plays multiple roles in how the body interacts with the different kinds of fat content in our bodies, particularly white fat (bad fat) and brown fat (good fat).
White fat is the most predominant form of fat in our bodies and is the type of fat associated with chronic illnesses such as diabetes and heart disease, especially when it accumulates in excessive quantities.
Brown fat cells, on the other hand, are a more active form of fat. Because they burn off energy as heat – due to having high numbers of mitochondria – this equates to a burning of more calories. Individuals with a healthy weight tend to have more brown fat than overweight people.
You can convert white fat to brown by exercising and getting a good night’s sleep, but adding CBD to your diet will also help to convert those pesky white fat cells to the brown energy burning variety.
Of course it is important to point out that CBD, or any other health or food supplement for that matter, is not a treatment for obesity and isn’t a replacement for a healthy diet and exercise.
Like all reputable suppliers of CBD products, we’d recommend you consult your doctor if you plan to use CBD for weight loss.
